The Lineage of One Lineage

Our story began in late 2008, with a simple but ambitious vision: to build a company we would want to own forever. We started the journey with a single warehouse and have grown into the cold chain industry’s largest player – and we’re just getting started.

We are Lineage, the world’s largest temperature-controlled warehousing REIT.

We invite you to explore the story of Lineage – the business we built, the people we built it with, and our lasting and singular focus on building Lineage into the most dynamic company it can be.

How our vision was born

Lineage started with the entrepreneurial vision of Adam Forste and Kevin Marchetti, friends who met early in their careers at Morgan Stanley. Together, channeling a shared ethos of wanting to build a company they could grow and compound over a long duration, Adam and Kevin sought out an opportunity in a vital but overlooked industry: cold storage.

They quickly learned the industry was the critical infrastructure behind the global food supply chain, and it was both resilient and growing. But it was under appreciated, and there was a clear opportunity to deploy capital to create a world-leading company. They also saw how innovation, automation and applied data science could make the warehouse, a warehousing network and the entire supply chain ecosystem more efficient.

Since the beginning they have focused all their energy on building an irreplaceable cold storage network powered by a differentiated technology platform. This approach is central to our purpose of transforming the global food supply chain to eliminate waste and help feed the world.

Culture at the core

Since Lineage’s inception, we have believed that culture matters and should be the bedrock of the company’s foundation. And our purpose fuels everything we do. At the simplest level, it’s about working with people you enjoy being around and having fun while doing it.

We have been privileged to have so many incredible people join Lineage from diverse backgrounds and through acquired companies. In many ways, we wanted Lineage to feel like a family. In fact, many of the companies we acquired were family-owned. The Lineage name reflects the heritage and pedigree of these companies, while the Lineage shield logo represents our strength and the conviction that the whole is greater than the sum of our parts. Many companies have joined Lineage because the owners and families behind them share our view that culture matters – we make it our responsibility to stay true to that post acquisition.

You can explore the rich histories of these companies below.

  • SeaFreeze Cold Storage
Seafreeze Cold Storage was formed in 1978 as a joint venture between Seafreeze (a cold storage warehouse company) and Sea Pro (a seafood processing company) at a location in the south end of the Port of Seattle. The facility was expanded five times over the next twenty years—changing ownership a few times along the way. By 2003, Seafreeze had discontinued its own food processing operations to focus on warehousing support for multiple on-site seafood and food processing companies. In 2008, Toyo Suisan Kaisha (a Japanese food conglomerate), sold the facility to Bay Grove Capital in the firm’s first deal in the warehousing and logistics space.
  • CityIce
CityIce’s cold storage roots go back as far as 1904. Over the years the business changed and moved several times before settling on the Port of Seattle’s Terminal 91. • Long term is an ethos

“Forever” was a defining idea behind how Lineage was built. That long term vision continues to guide how we build and invest in our network, integrate new solutions for customers, and deploy technology across the business.

Our warehouse portfolio reflects our focused investment in the highest quality facilities in the most strategic markets for our customers and our customers’ customers. As we look to grow, both out as well as up via next-generation automated warehouses, we remain committed to maintaining our assets at the highest level. We have also invested in solutions that support our customers beyond the four walls of the warehouse with a goal to streamline their supply chains and reduce waste in the system.

We also committed to transformational technology and data science from the outset of our journey, recognizing early that creating – and owning – a differentiated tech platform would enhance the customer experience, make our team members more successful, and optimize both energy usage and our physical assets while making the supply chain more efficient. Expansive data assets. Warehouse control and automation design. Refrigeration and thermodynamics. A.I. learning. Algorithmic-driven workflows. These are the sectors in which Lineage is recognized as a global leader driving innovation within our industry and beyond.

The future is on the line

From our first warehouse, through everything we’ve built, invested in, and innovated since our founding, our simple but ambitious vision has always driven us toward that number we started with: one. One network. One trusted partner. One irreplaceable global supply chain. As One Lineage.

That vision continues to drive us every day. Where will it take us tomorrow?
